Eastern Railway to Restructure Circular Railway Suburban Services to Improve Long-Distance Train Operations
Morning and Evening Peak-Hour Commuter Services to Remain Unaffected

Kolkata, July 1, 2026: In a major operational overhaul aimed at enhancing punctuality and easing congestion at Kolkata Railway Station, the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway has announced a comprehensive restructuring of suburban train services on the Circular Railway line. The initiative is designed to create additional capacity for Mail, Express and Train-on-Demand (TOD) services while ensuring that regular commuters during peak hours remain unaffected.
According to Eastern Railway, the restructuring has become necessary due to the growing demand for long-distance train operations and the acute shortage of platform availability at Kolkata Station (KOAA). Platform No. 1, the only platform with direct concourse access, remains occupied by Circular Railway suburban services from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm, leaving limited scope to accommodate additional long-distance trains. The remaining platforms are already operating close to their maximum capacity.
Railway officials also highlighted the operational limitations of the 18.40-km single-line Circular Railway stretch between Dum Dum Junction and Majerhat. The route passes along the banks of the Hooghly River and is constrained by 17 level crossings, multiple sharp curves requiring speed restrictions of 40 kmph, densely populated areas and periodic service disruptions during festivals such as idol immersion processions.
Six-Hour Operational Window for Long-Distance Trains
Under the new plan, all suburban services during the morning and evening rush hours will continue without any changes. However, during the off-peak period between 11:15 am and 5:15 pm, no suburban trains will pass through Kolkata Station. This six-hour operational window will allow Platform No. 1 to be dedicated to handling long-distance Mail, Express and TOD services.
During this period, Circular Railway suburban trains will instead originate from and terminate at Tala Railway Station, located approximately 300 metres from Kolkata Station. Railway authorities said Tala offers greater convenience for commuters due to its proximity to the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital as well as the surrounding commercial area.
Key Changes in Suburban Services
The proposed restructuring includes several modifications to existing train operations during off-peak hours:
- A new suburban service will be introduced between Majerhat and Tala.
- Train No. 30411 will originate from Tala and operate to Sealdah via Majerhat instead of starting from B.B.D. Bag.
- Train No. 30333 will originate from B.B.D. Bag and run via Ballygunge and Kankurgachhi to an extended destination at Bangaon instead of Habra.
- Train Nos. 30121 (Majherhat–Naihati) and 30312 (Barasat–Majherhat), which currently operate through the Circular Railway, will be diverted via Kankurgachhi and Ballygunge.
- Train No. 30346 (Bangaon–Majherhat) will terminate at Barasat instead of Majherhat.
- Train No. 30122 (Naihati–Ballygunge) will terminate at B.B.D. Bag instead of Ballygunge.
- Train No. 30111 will originate from B.B.D. Bag instead of Ballygunge to facilitate office commuters.
- The continuity of certain off-peak services, including Train Nos. 30311 (Majherhat–Barasat), 30332 (Habra–Majherhat) and 30353 (Majherhat–Duttapukur Local), may be affected.
Eastern Railway clarified that the effective date of the revised timetable will be announced separately along with detailed train schedules.
Expected Benefits
The Sealdah Division expects the restructuring to significantly improve operational efficiency across the network. The anticipated benefits include:
- Better utilisation of all five platforms at Kolkata Station.
- Improved punctuality of Mail, Express and Train-on-Demand services.
- Reduced locomotive crossing and shunting movements, resulting in smoother operations.
- Decongestion at critical junctions, particularly Dum Dum Junction and Sealdah (South), leading to safer and more reliable rail operations.
Eastern Railway has appealed to passengers to extend their cooperation during the implementation of the revised service pattern, stating that the initiative is a long-term step towards developing Kolkata Station into a major coaching terminal while providing a more efficient and dependable railway network for all passengers.
