Lok Sabha Speaker Leads Nation in Paying Tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Birth Anniversary

New Delhi, July 6: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla on Monday led Members of Parliament in paying floral tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary at a solemn function held in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.
Several prominent Union Ministers and dignitaries joined the tribute ceremony, including Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan. Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh, along with Members of Parliament, former MPs, and senior parliamentary officials, also paid their respects.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee is remembered as an eminent parliamentarian, distinguished educationist, and visionary statesman who made lasting contributions to India’s political and educational landscape. Born on July 6, 1901, he played a key role in shaping modern India and was a strong advocate of national unity and integrity.
He holds the distinction of being the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and later emerged as a significant figure in India’s parliamentary history. As a Member of the First Lok Sabha, Dr. Mookerjee was widely respected for his eloquence, intellectual depth, and steadfast commitment to democratic values.
His contributions to parliamentary discourse and national issues earned him recognition as one of the most distinguished leaders of his time. He continues to be remembered for his unwavering dedication to public service and the nation.
The portrait of Dr. Mookerjee displayed in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan was painted by noted artist Shri N. S. Subbakrishna and was unveiled on May 31, 1991, by the then President of India, Shri R. Venkataraman.
