Youth Olympic Flame to Make Historic African Debut Ahead of Dakar 2026

DAKAR, September 3, 2026: A new chapter in Olympic history is set to unfold this month as the flame of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games prepares to travel to Africa for the first time.
The ceremonial journey will begin on 10 September 2026 at Athens’ historic Panathenaic Stadium, where the Youth Olympic flame will be ignited using sunlight concentrated through a parabolic mirror. From Greece, the flame will travel to Senegal before continuing to Dakar, the host city of the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games.
The flame is scheduled to reach Dakar on 12 September, marking the beginning of a nationwide celebration centred on Senegalese youth, culture, hospitality and Olympic ideals.
Flame Tour to Cross All 14 Regions of Senegal
Following its arrival, the flame will embark on the Dakar 2026 Flame Tour, a major nationwide initiative designed to bring the Youth Olympic spirit directly to communities.
The tour will feature 30 stops across all 14 regions of Senegal before concluding shortly ahead of the Games’ Opening Ceremony on 31 October 2026.
Organised under the theme “Pass the Energy”, the journey is intended to connect young people and communities through sport, cultural expression and participation. It will also showcase Senegal’s tradition of teranga—a cultural value associated with hospitality, generosity and welcoming others.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from 31 October to 13 November 2026, bringing together talented young athletes from around the world.
A Celebration Rooted in Senegalese Culture
The arrival ceremony in Dakar is expected to combine Olympic traditions with elements of Senegalese heritage.
One of the highlights will be the “March of the Linguères”, featuring 100 Senegalese women in a symbolic procession. The programme is expected to culminate in the lighting of a cauldron at Place du Souvenir.
The organisers envision the event as a public celebration featuring cultural performances, official ceremonies and community participation.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry has emphasised the unifying power of the Olympic flame, describing it as a symbol capable of bringing people together and encouraging young people to aspire to greater possibilities.
Continental Participation Planned Across Africa
The significance of the Dakar 2026 flame will extend beyond Senegal.
In keeping with the Games’ motto, “Africa Welcomes, Dakar Celebrates,” Olymafrica centres and more than 40 African National Olympic Committees are expected to participate in a continent-wide educational and sporting relay.
Participants will combine walking or running with workshops focused on Olympic values. Collectively, the initiative aims to symbolically cover 30,500 kilometres, approximately representing the perimeter of the African continent.
The programme is intended to transform the arrival of the flame into a wider African celebration of youth, sport, education and shared Olympic values.
Education and Sport at the Heart of the Initiative
An educational toolkit linked to the Flame Tour has also been developed through the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP).
The initiative is designed for children between 6 and 16 years of age and brings together sports activities with education, art and culture, sustainability and future-oriented exercises.
Rather than focusing solely on competition, the programme seeks to use the Youth Olympic movement as an educational platform through which children can explore values such as excellence, friendship and respect.
Dakar 2026: A Historic Milestone for Africa
The Dakar Youth Olympic Games carry significance well beyond the sporting arena. They represent the first Olympic sporting event to be hosted on African soil, placing Senegal and the continent at the centre of an important moment in the Olympic movement.
The Flame Tour is therefore expected to serve both as a countdown to the Games and as a broader celebration of Africa’s young generation.
As the flame leaves the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games and begins its journey towards Senegal, its arrival in Dakar will symbolically connect Olympic heritage with a new African chapter—one centred on youth, culture, participation and sporting ambition.
