New chapter to promote sustainable infrastructure, resource efficiency and resilient urban development in the region

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has launched its 33rd chapter in Siliguri, marking a significant step towards expanding sustainable building practices across North Bengal.

The newly established IGBC Siliguri Chapter will provide a collaborative platform for advancing green infrastructure, promoting resource-efficient construction and supporting the development of a healthier and more resilient built environment across the region.

Stakeholders Come Together in Siliguri

The chapter was formally inaugurated at an event held at Marriott, Siliguri, bringing together representatives from the Government of West Bengal, real estate and infrastructure sectors, architecture, construction, building services and sustainability fields.

The programme featured discussions on India’s evolving green building movement, the potential for sustainable development in North Bengal and the region’s aspirations for environmentally responsible urban growth. Participants also discussed emerging green building materials, technologies and solutions.

Among the senior dignitaries and industry leaders present were Shri Anandamay Barman, Minister of State for Finance & Transport, Government of West Bengal, who attended as Guest of Honour; C Shekar Reddy, National Chairman, IGBC; Satish Mitruka, Chairman, CII North Bengal Council; and M Anand, Executive Director, CII Indian Green Building Council.

Government-Industry Collaboration Key to Sustainable Growth

Addressing the gathering, Shri Anandamay Barman said the establishment of the Siliguri chapter would help bring sustainability closer to North Bengal’s development priorities.

He emphasised that as the region expands, its infrastructure and urban development need to be supported by responsible and resource-efficient practices. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, industry and professionals in creating a greener and more resilient North Bengal.

Focus on North Bengal’s Green Building Potential

The inaugural programme began with a welcome address by Satish Mitruka, Chairman, CII North Bengal Council.

This was followed by a presentation from M Anand, Executive Director, CII Indian Green Building Council, focusing on the green building movement in India and opportunities for North Bengal.

C Shekar Reddy, National Chairman, IGBC, delivered the special address before formally launching the new Siliguri chapter.

Reddy said the launch represented an important milestone in taking India’s green building movement deeper into North Bengal. He noted that Siliguri and the surrounding region have considerable potential for sustainable urban growth, and said the chapter would facilitate greater cooperation among government bodies, industry, architects, developers, academia and other stakeholders.

He further stressed the role of awareness, knowledge-sharing and innovative technologies in promoting greener, healthier and more resilient buildings and infrastructure.

New Chapter Gets Leadership Team

The newly launched IGBC Siliguri Chapter will be headed by K. K. Roy as Chairman and Sandeep Goyal as Co-Chairman.

Roy is the Founder & Director of Green Architecture Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd., while Goyal is the Founder & Managing Director of SandeepG Real Estate. Their leadership positions were formally installed during the inaugural programme.

Green Project and Student Chapter Also Launched

The event also recognised an IGBC Green Project, highlighting the importance of acknowledging leadership in sustainable construction and green building practices.

In another significant development, the first IGBC Student Chapter in North Bengal was launched at Darjeeling Hill Institute of Technology and Management.

The certificate was received by Prof. Mithun Chakraborty, Principal, along with faculty members and students of the institute’s Civil Engineering Department.

The student chapter initiative is expected to contribute towards building greater awareness and developing green-building capabilities among the next generation of engineers and professionals.

A New Platform for Sustainable North Bengal

With the launch of its Siliguri chapter, IGBC has expanded its regional network and created a dedicated platform for stakeholders in North Bengal to collaborate on green construction, sustainable infrastructure, innovative building technologies and resource-efficient development.

The initiative comes at a time when sustainable urban growth is becoming increasingly important for rapidly developing regional centres such as Siliguri, while also creating opportunities for professionals, institutions and industry to participate in India’s broader green building movement.
