Kolkata, October 23, 2026: More than 8,000 cadets of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) from the West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate demonstrated discipline, courage and a strong spirit of community service during the six-day Durga Puja festivities across West Bengal. Their voluntary efforts helped the police and civil administration manage large crowds and maintain orderly arrangements at various puja pandals.
The cadets played an important role in assisting the authorities with crowd control, regulating the movement of visitors, facilitating pandal operations and extending support to elderly citizens and other members of the public. Their alertness, commitment and disciplined conduct contributed to the administration’s efforts to manage the significant influx of devotees during one of Bengal’s biggest annual festivals.
Cadets Continue Their Duties Despite Challenging Circumstances
The NCC Directorate highlighted the cadets’ determination in the aftermath of the unfortunate incident at the Chorbagaan Durga Puja pandal. Despite the difficult circumstances, the young volunteers continued to report for their assigned duties and extended their full cooperation to the police and civil administration.
Their response reflected a strong sense of civic responsibility and a willingness to put public welfare first, reinforcing the importance of youth participation in community safety and emergency support.
NCC Leadership Appreciates the Cadets’ Contribution
Maj Gen APS Chahal, SM, Additional Director General (ADG) of the NCC West Bengal & Sikkim Directorate, praised the cadets for their dedication, discipline and readiness to assist the authorities.
At a ceremony held at the NCC Directorate in New Alipore, Kolkata, he acknowledged the contribution made by the cadets in supporting public safety, convenience and well-being throughout the festival, including during the challenging period following the Chorbagaan incident.
He also recognised the coordinated efforts of Associate NCC Officers, Permanent Instructors and Group Headquarters, whose involvement helped ensure the effective deployment of cadets and the successful completion of their assigned responsibilities.

Focus on Expanding NCC Across West Bengal
During the event, Maj Gen Chahal highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the NCC’s presence and capabilities in West Bengal. He stated that the Directorate had been engaging with the state government to seek the necessary support in areas such as budget allocation, staffing, infrastructure and incentives.
He also appreciated the positive approach and vision of the new West Bengal government towards expanding NCC coverage to all institutions across the state. The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young people and equipping them with the discipline, leadership skills and sense of responsibility needed to contribute to society.
Youth Participation Strengthens Community Spirit
The NCC cadets’ voluntary service during Durga Puja 2026 demonstrated how organised youth participation can support public administration during major cultural and religious gatherings. Their involvement helped authorities manage crowds while providing assistance to visitors, particularly those who required additional support.
The Directorate said the cadets’ efforts reflected the NCC’s core principles of discipline, selfless service, leadership and national commitment. Their contribution also reinforced the organisation’s wider role in nation-building, community engagement and the development of responsible citizens.
The service rendered during the festival stands as an example of how young people can make a meaningful difference through teamwork, dedication and a commitment to public welfare.
