Appeal to people not to support violence: Mamata Banerjee in Darjeeling
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today termed the strike called by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha in Darjeeling as illegal and said police is taking appropriate action. She condemned the violence unleashed yesterday in the Hills and said “no one is above law”.
“Government will take action against those who participate (in violence). We want peace and development of the Hills. Government is not going to tolerate all these things,” she said.
Regarding yesterday’s incident, the CM said: “Only 3-4 people are responsible for this incident. They cannot fight us on developmental issue so are they are doing this. GTA election is after one month. They have not done any work in last 5 years. We gave all support to them in the past, now Govt is very tough.”
She also maintained that the government is giving full support to the tourists in the Hills. “There is no reason to be scared. We have organised 8-10 buses for the tourists so that they can reach Kolkata safely. Buses will start plying from 11 am. We have also started a helpline number,” the Chief Minister said.

গোর্খা জনমুক্তি মোর্চার ডাকা বনধকে আজ বেআইনি বললেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। আজ সকালে দার্জিলিঙের পরিস্থিতি পরিদর্শনে যান মুখ্যমন্ত্রী। সেই সময় সাংবাদিকদের তিনি বলেন,আজকের বনধ বেআইনি, বনধে যারা অংশগ্রহণ করবে তাদের বিরুদ্ধে আইনি ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে। কথায় কথায় বনধ ধর্মঘট কোন শান্তির বার্তা নয়।
তিনি আরও বলেন, আমরা চাই পাহাড়ে শান্তি বজায় থাকুক, পাহাড়ের উন্নয়ন হোক। আইন আইনের পথে চলবে, পুলিশ পুলিশের কাজ করবে, কাউকে রেয়াত করা হবে না। কেউ আইনের উর্দ্ধে নয়।
গতকালের ঘটনা সম্পর্কে তিনি বলেন, ৩-৪ জন লোকের জন্য এসব হচ্ছে, পুরো ঘটনাটা একতরফা, কোন ইস্যু নেই। আর এক মাস বাকি GTA নির্বাচনের। ৫ বছরে কোন কাজ করেনি। আমি মানুষকে বলব ওদের সমর্থন না করতে।সরকার এতদিন ওদের সবরকম সাহায্য করেছে, কিন্তু এখন সরকার অনেক কঠোর।গতকালের ঘটনার পর সরকার কাউকে রেয়াত করবে না।
পর্যটকদের আশ্বস্ত করে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, সরকার পর্যটকদের পাশে আছে। পর্যটকদের ভয় পাওয়ার বা আতঙ্কিত হওয়ার কোন কারণ নেই। পর্যটকরা যাতে নিরাপদে পৌঁছতে পারে তাই ৮-১০ টি বাসের ব্যবস্থা করা হয়েছে। বেলা ১১ টা থেকে থেকে শিলিগুড়ি যাওয়ার বাস ছাড়বে। ২ ঘণ্টা অন্তর বাস ছাড়বে, হেল্পলাইন নম্বর চালু হয়েছে।
