SHAHANA SHOME – A LITTLE SINGING WONDER WHO RAISED FUNDS FOR THE EDUCATION OF UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN, HAS RELEASED A NEW COVER SONG SUPPORTING THE CAUSE OF THE GIRL CHILD
Shahana Shome, a twelve years old talented singer who idolizes Asha Bhosle, has come up with her new cover song “O Ri Chiraiya” which released on her YouTube channel recently. Just to recap, she did something remarkable with her last released single “Yun Saja Chand” (originally sung by Asha Bhosle) to raise funds for helping the education of underprivileged children.
It was the Rotary Club of Bombay-Powai, which supported her earlier initiative and they were able to raise a fund of Rs. 1.34 lacs. Rotary has utilised this fund along with other funds to donate a sum of Rs 3 lacs to Rishi Valmiki Eco School, Goregaon(W), Mumbai. Using this money, they will be able to fund the school fees of 30 students of std X and 2 students of std IX. The school will be utilizing these funds as School fees to pay 04 teachers (Std. 8th – 10th) their 50% salaries for 8 months.
The new song by Shahana is an effort to spread the message – “Save the Girl Child’ – through music and poetry. This cover is a beautifully written song by Swanand Kirkire and put to music by Ram Sampat – “O Ri Chiraiya”. On the occasion of this Children’s Day, she presents the song in her own unique way.
When an educated mother starts worrying about the gender of the baby before it is born, we know she is living in a society which is still orthodox, inspite of being in the twenty first century. This is what we have to change – this orthodox mentality of gender inequality, which breeds intolerance to a girl child’s education and success and ultimately manifests itself in crimes against her.
With some additional poetry by her father and enhanced by the haunting melody of the violin, Shahana’s emotional rendition of this unique composition brings alive the whole concept through this father daughter interplay.
Shahana says – ” I shall continue my efforts to highlight social issues and to bring about a change through my musical productions from time to time. I hope you like it and spread the message far and wide. If through this we are able to help even one girl child anywhere, we would feel blessed.”
