starts a 17-day workshop on ‘Traditional Jhumur Songs of Bengal’;to continue till March 30, 2017, from 12noon to 5pm daily. Kolkata, March 14, 2017:

The West Bengal State Akademi of Dance Drama Music and Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, with financial support from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, is holding a

17-day workshop on ‘Traditional Jhumur Songs of Bengal’ at the Jorasanko Thakurbari, Kolkata (from March 14 to March 30, 2017, between 12noon and 5pm daily).

The 50 participants in the workshop are being trained by the well-known Jhumur artistes Mihirlal Singhdeo, Bijoy Karmakar, Postobala Debi, Upendranath Mahato, Durjodhan Karmakar and Kiriti Mahato. The workshop was inaugurated here today by some of them, Dr. Kankana Mitra, Head of the Department of Vocal Music, Shri Biswajit Bhattacharya of the Department of Instrumental Music, Prof. Indrani Ghosh of the Department of Rabindrasangeet, Rabindra Bharati University, and Dr. Haimanti Chattopadhyay, Member-Secretary, West Bengal State Akademi of Dance Drama Music and Visual Arts. The workshop is being conducted by Dr. Kankana Mitra.

One of the well-known Jhumur artistes Sm. Postobala Debi will present Jhumur songs on March 18, 19 and 20, 2017, after 12 noon. Eminent researchers on Jhumur songs Dr. Ashis Giri and Shri Ashok Das will speak at the workshop on March 29 and 30, 2017, while Shri Amulya Kumar will address the participants earlier on March 26, 27 and 28, 2017, all of them on Jhumur songs, on all days after 12 noon when the workshop starts.
