Sweetwater fishes like rohu, catla and mrigel are soon going to be cultivated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands too. The hatchlings and fish feed required for the purpose are going to be supplied by the Fisheries Department of the Bengal Government.
About 50 metric tonnes of feed would be transported via ships, the first 10 metric tonnes of which would be transported during this month. Earning from this would amount to Rs 4.5 crore. Later, hatchlings would be transported via planes.
These would be the first such hatcheries in the islands and it is the Bengal Government which would be setting them up.
