PKK, Chandigarh Recently Organised The 50th All India Bhaskar Rao Nritya & Sangeet Sammelan

The ‘All India Bhaskar Rao Nritya & Sangeet Sammelan’ started by Chandigarh-based Prachin Kalakendra recently celebrated its golden jubilee. The week-long conference was held recently at the Tagore Theater (Sector-16) in full compliance with all the Covid-19 protocol.

Since Padma Vibhushan Vishwa Mohan who was supposed to get the celebrations going could not be present due to sudden health issues, his son Salil Bhatt took to a solo rendition of his Satvik Veena. He commenced with Raga Yajneshwari, a composition created by Pandit Ravi Shankar with the accompaniment of tabla player Abhishek Mishra. Later, Rajasthani folk artist and Khartal player Kutla Khan and young drummer Paarth Koser joined him to render a fusion based on Raga Bhopali, pahari and folk-music one after the other.

During this dance and music congress, Odissi dancer Vidushi Sujata Mohapatra and her troupe performed Mangalacharan featuring Gitagovindam, Hansadhvani Pallabi etc. The stage came equally alive with dance rhythms when Sameera Koser showcased her kathak in Jaipur gharana through, Gat, Nikash, That, Aman, Uthan, Chakradar, Padan and Upaj. Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya had delved into his self-composed Raga Janasammohani (Alap, Jod, Gat, Jhap-taal, Teemn-taal, Sawal Jawab). Purnima Bhatt expertly served Raga Puria Kalyan (Aalap, Bandish, Vilambit Ektal). Rakesh Chaurasia was masterful with his instrument, the flute on Raga Durga (Aalap, Jod, Madhyalaya, Pahari Dhun). Mahalakshmi Shenoy’s selected to sing Raga Kalavati (Aalap, Vilambit Ektal, Bandish: sajan ghar aaye, drut teen-tal: tumare bina me to). She concluded her session with Bhajans inKankani and Kannada languages.

While Mallick Brothers comprising Prashant and Nishant Mallick the flag-bearers of the illustrious Darbhanga Gharana presented Raga Jog (Alap, Vilambit Dhamar Tal: Khelan Ai Hori Kanhai, Suratal: Kripalam Mahakal), another brother-duo, the Calcutta based Barman Bandhus — Madhu and Gopal Barman gelled with Tabla and Srikhol, respectively. They gifted Rela, Kaida, Palta in Rupak Taal. Pt. Alok Lahiri and Abhishek Lahiri played Raga Rageshri (Alap, Jod, Jhala, Jhap-taal and Teen taal Gat) and Raga Kafi in Rupak Taal on his Sarod.

Raga Yaman was interpreted by Ambareesh Das (Aalap, Vilambit Eektal, Bandish: kajra kaise dalu, drut bandish: abgun na kijiye guni sang etc.). Joydev and Rajbinder, both Tabla exponents paired up to disseminate Rela, Kaida And Palta in the Punjab Gharana. Notable performances were also proferred by the dance troupe, Rangatataratma via Naad, Bindu, Kala, Ras etc. It was ably complimented by live song and percussion routine by Debashis Adhikari, Akram Khan, Dr. Tarun Joshi, Hiranmoy Mitra, Parmita Mukherjee and others.This event which was live-streamed on PKK’s Facebook page and YouTube channel are also archived there for posterity.
