METRO FOR FAST COMMUTING BUT NOT FOR COMMITTING SUICIDE

Kolkata Date: 10.09.2023

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on the 10th of September. The day is dedicated to educating and aware people not to commit suicide which is currently increasing at an alarming rate across the globe. The theme of this year of this Day is “Create Hope through Action”.

Kolkata Metro is also taking this opportunity to make its commuters aware of the evils of suicide which has become a major social issue with the rising aspiration levels and decreasing social values.

Since its inception, 361 suicide attempts have been made to date in Kolkata Metro. Alert Metro staff foiled 187 attempts and saved 188 precious lives. In the last year i.e. 2022, 6 suicide attempts were made out of which 2 attempts were foiled by the alert Metro staff. In this year i.e. 2023, 9 such attempts have been made to date, out of which 7 attempts have been foiled by the Metro staff. On-duty station staff and RPF personnel always remain vigilant to make people aware of this social evil. In order to prevent such attempts, Platform Screen Doors have been installed at all the stations of East-West Metro. Placards and posters are on display at all stations requesting all to refrain from committing suicide. Helpline Numbers are also on display at different Metro stations for the aid of suicide-prone people and their relatives.

Kolkata Metro is the country’s first Metro. It is the ‘Lifeline of Kolkata’. Any suicide attempt in Metro throws the entire system out of gear. So, come forward to use the Metro Railway for fast and hassle-free travelling not to commit suicide.
