Eastern Railway’s Howrah station, a symbol of the city’s heritage, stands as one of India’s oldest and most prestigious Railway hubs. Catering to approximately 6.13 lakh passengers daily, with 22 platforms facilitating the movement of 235 pairs of suburban trains and 88 pairs of mail/express trains, Howrah station is a vital transportation hub.

Under the inspirational leadership of Shri Milind K Deouskar, General Manager of Eastern Railway, a comprehensive initiative has been launched to elevate the passenger experience and maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the station premises.

Key Initiatives Include:

Bio-Toilet Installation: Implementation of bio-toilets across the entire fleet of passenger coaches to eliminate direct discharge of human waste, contributing to a cleaner environment.

End-to-End Cleaning: Rigorous cleaning of coaches, including toilets, at both ends, incorporating mechanized cleaning processes to enhance overall hygiene.

Special Cleanliness Campaigns: Regular organization of cleanliness campaigns under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, striving for sustained improvements in cleanliness standards at Howrah station.

Kitchen Upgradation: Upgradation of Base Kitchen/Kitchen Units to ensure the highest standards in food preparation and hygiene.

Regular Checks: Implementation of routine checks and surprise inspections on cleanliness, focusing on station premises, coaches, and washrooms.

Gender-Specific Facilities: Provision of separate toilets for men and women at Howrah Station in compliance with established norms.

Mechanised Cleaning: Eastern Railway’s Howrah Division actively engages in mechanised cleaning process for coaches and station premises, ensuring a pristine environment.

The ongoing Swachhta Pakhwada campaign, aligned with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, underscores the commitment to cleanliness with fortnightly and monthly initiatives and awareness drives.

Eastern Railway, led by Shri Milind K Deouskar, is dedicated to creating a positive and hygienic environment for the millions of passengers traversing through Howrah station daily.
