Winner of the 2024 European Union Prize for Literature will be announced tonight

The winner of the 2024 European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) as well as five special mentions will be announced at the Brussels Book Fair later today. The Prize recognises emerging contemporary fiction writers from all 40 countries participating in the Creative Europe programme. The winner is selected by an international jury of seven literary personalities. This year’s edition saw emerging authors from 13 Creative Europe countries nominated.

Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Iliana Ivanova said: “All works nominated this year showcase the richness and diversity of European literature. At the European Commission, we take pride in supporting a prize that helps talented writers from across Europe connect with readers worldwide through translations and promotion. Let’s keep celebrating our diverse European literature!”

Over the past 15 years, the European Union Prize for Literature has recognised 177 emerging European literary talents, highlighting European literature’s creativity and diversity and promoting its circulation and translation. The Prize is organised by the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF) with the support of the Commission.

This year’s announcement will be done at 17:00 CEST at the Brussels Book Fair where the European Union is a guest of honour, offering another opportunity to celebrate the incredible diversity of literary talent and voices in the EU. To mark the occasion, professionals from the book sector benefitting from the Creative Europe programme have been invited to showcase their projects and careers on diverse subjects including literary translation, reading promotion, lesser-used languages, foreign literature publishing, and a variety of literary professions.
