National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29th to commemorate the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the most iconic figures in Indian sports history. He was a legendary field hockey player whose exceptional skills and achievements earned him the nickname “The Wizard” of hockey. His contribution to the sport and his role in India’s success in hockey are central to the significance of this day. His career spanned from the 1920s to the 1940s, during which he played a pivotal role in leading India to three Olympic gold medals in hockey (1928, 1932, and 1936). National Sports Day was officially established in 2012 to honor Dhyan Chand’s legacy and to promote sports and physical education across the country.

The “RUN FOR FUN” event aimed to encourage active lifestyles and foster a sense of camaraderie among participants. The 4km run was for Senior Division(SD) and Senior Wing(SW) cadets both boys and girls, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the event. The success of today’s event reaffirms the commitment of the NCC Group Headquarters, Guwahati and NCC Directorate NER in promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle among the youth. As National Sports Day draws to a close, the memories and lessons from the “RUN FOR FUN” event will undoubtedly inspire many to continue their journey towards a healthier and more active life.
