SOFT DRINK OR SLOW POISON? Still gets endorsements of the legends of sports in India

  • By Amit Mukherjee

  • The only message of a recent picture of a soft drink brand advertisement has drawn attention of the sports lovers across and it has a huge contribution to participating in the Olympic competition and winning the Olympic medals!!!

Who can give better advice than a better sportsperson to maintain good health?

Soft drink or slow poison? Is no more a myth but has its bad effects medically proven as high sugar and other harmful ingredients added.

Phosphoric acid, commonly present in most of dark soft drinks can block calcium absorption in the human body. Yes, as a strong acid, it will hydrolyze the collagen protein matrix to give water-soluble amino acids. An excess of phosphoric acid will react with hydroxyapatite, the most important mineral in bone, to form monocalcium phosphate, which is soluble in water. Water is also formed in this reaction. Continuous intake of this substance could weaken the bones as per a study by leading health institutions globally.

The Phosphoric acids in soda are responsible for reducing calcium from the bones and making bones brittle. Some studies have found that women who drank more sugary beverages or soda every day had around 4% lower mineral density in bones, especially hips. People who consume two or more soft drinks per week are nearly twice at risk of suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Post-menopausal women who consume a lot of soft drinks have a higher risk of developing endometrial cancer.

There have been reports that chemicals used in artificial flavorings and preservatives in soft drinks could worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD.

Even Indian icon, Amitabh Bachchan has stopped advertising a popular ” Pepsi ” after he was confronted by a school girl about why he promoted soft drinks while her teacher had branded soft drinks as poison.

Sportspersons prepare themselves for years to win an Olympic medal or after winning an Olympic medal how many companies will approve him/ her to sell their products.

New slogan / tag line of ” Thums Up ” —- The storm that turns everything. “Thums Up” will turn defeat into victory,
Manu Bhaker promotes superstition and slow poison as endorsement is not ideal for any icon.

Sportsperson before Olympics and salesperson after Olympics is what people are calling. But it is sure choice is her and none can stop such act by law but definately a case for a more ethical stand as public figure.
