PM Modi Meets US President Donald Trump at G7 Summit in France, Reviews Progress in Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met United States President Donald J. Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on June 17, 2026, reaffirming the strong and growing partnership between India and the United States.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi appreciated President Trump’s diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in West Asia and restoring peace and stability across the region. He also emphasized the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and uninterrupted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while highlighting the need to ensure the safety and security of seafarers.
The two leaders reviewed the significant progress achieved under the India–U.S. COMPACT initiative (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology), which was launched following their meeting in Washington D.C. in February 2025. They welcomed advancements in defence cooperation, strategic technologies, energy collaboration, and bilateral trade.
Prime Minister Modi and President Trump expressed satisfaction over the substantial headway made in negotiations for an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement. Both leaders directed officials from their respective countries to expedite efforts toward a balanced, mutually beneficial, and commercially meaningful agreement. In this regard, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to visit India next week for further discussions.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, with the shared objective of promoting prosperity, security, and economic growth for the people of both nations.
The meeting underscored the continued importance of India-U.S. relations as a key pillar of global stability, economic development, and strategic cooperation in an increasingly interconnected world.
