Hyderabad, June 18: In a major breakthrough for India’s agricultural sector, the ICAR–Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (ICAR-IIOR), Hyderabad, has developed an innovative biopolymer-based Smart Seed Coating Technology aimed at improving seed quality, enhancing crop establishment, and increasing resilience against climate-related challenges.
The technology comes at a crucial time when Indian agriculture is facing growing threats from climate change, erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, rising temperatures, soil degradation, and increasing pest and disease pressures. Scientists believe that strengthening seed performance during the earliest stages of crop growth can significantly improve productivity while reducing farming risks.
Smart Seeds for a Changing Climate
The patented Smart Seed Coating Technology uses biodegradable biopolymers to create a protective layer around seeds. This coating serves as a delivery system for beneficial microbes, nutrients, micronutrients, plant growth promoters, and crop protection agents, ensuring that these essential inputs are available directly at the seed-soil interface.
According to researchers, the technology helps accelerate germination, improve seedling vigor, promote stronger root systems, and increase tolerance to environmental stress during the critical establishment phase of crop growth.
Yield Increase of Up to 30 Percent
Field demonstrations conducted under real farming conditions have produced encouraging results. Trials in Telangana showed that groundnut and soybean crops treated with Smart Seed Technology recorded yield increases of nearly 30 percent compared to conventional farming practices.
Further multi-location trials conducted under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Seeds demonstrated productivity gains ranging from 12 percent to 37 percent across crops such as soybean, maize, chickpea, cotton, mustard, pigeon pea, and groundnut. Researchers observed consistent improvements in seedling establishment, plant vigor, and overall crop performance.
A Game-Changer for Rainfed Agriculture
Experts believe the technology could prove especially valuable for India’s rainfed farming regions, which account for a substantial portion of the country’s cultivated land. Such regions are frequently affected by delayed monsoons, moisture stress, poor soil conditions, and pest infestations that often reduce crop productivity.
By strengthening seedling survival and improving crop establishment during the most vulnerable growth stages, Smart Seeds can help farmers better withstand climatic uncertainties while reducing production risks.
One Technology, Multiple Benefits
Unlike conventional seed treatments designed for a single purpose, ICAR-IIOR’s platform integrates multiple benefits into one application. The technology can be customized for cereals, millets, pulses, oilseeds, fibre crops, fodder crops, vegetables, spices, and horticultural crops, making it suitable for a wide range of agricultural systems across India.
The innovation aligns with India’s broader goals of promoting sustainable agriculture, improving seed systems, enhancing resource-use efficiency, and strengthening food and nutritional security.
Public-Private Partnerships for Wider Adoption
To ensure large-scale adoption, ICAR-IIOR is encouraging partnerships with both public and private seed organizations. Institutions such as State Seed Development Corporations, the National Seed Corporation, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), seed processing units, seed entrepreneurs, and private seed companies are expected to play a vital role in distributing Smart Seeds to farmers nationwide.
Scientists at ICAR-IIOR emphasized that the future of agriculture will increasingly depend on technologies that maximize the effectiveness of every farm input while minimizing environmental impact. Smart Seeds represent a significant step in that direction by delivering protection, nutrition, and biological support precisely where crops need it most.
As India continues to strengthen climate-resilient farming practices, the widespread adoption of Smart Seed Technology could enhance agricultural productivity, improve farmer incomes, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the country’s food production systems.
