India’s Defence and Maritime Growth Reflects Strong Push for Self-Reliance: PM Modi
India has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its defence sector through major policy reforms and a sustained focus on self-reliance in manufacturing. Highlighting this progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that these initiatives have unlocked new opportunities in defence design, production, and exports.
He noted that India’s total defence production, which stood at approximately ₹40,000 crore in 2014, has surged to nearly ₹1.8 lakh crore. This significant rise reflects the country’s steady advancement toward building a robust, self-reliant, and globally competitive defence industry. The Prime Minister emphasized that the achievements of the past twelve years demonstrate how clear policies, the right direction, and collective commitment can drive transformative change.
Referring to India’s rich maritime legacy, the Prime Minister said West Bengal holds a prominent place in the nation’s maritime history. He observed that the state has long played a vital role in India’s global trade and connectivity. The Hooghly River, he remarked, has witnessed evolving chapters of history, expanding trade networks, and new avenues of development.
He also highlighted the significance of the port named after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, India’s first Minister for Industry and a distinguished son of Bengal. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that West Bengal is poised to emerge as a key hub for India’s Blue Economy, maritime manufacturing, logistics, and coastal development in the coming years.
Reiterating India’s long-standing perspective on oceans as channels of cooperation and connectivity, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of security and self-reliance. He stated that security safeguards prosperity, while self-reliance shapes the future.
Citing INS Agray, INS Dunagiri, and INS Sanshodhak, he said these vessels represent the nation’s growing capabilities, confidence, and determination to move forward with renewed strength in the 21st century.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister extended his appreciation to Indian Navy personnel, scientists, engineers, workers, and citizens for their contributions. He expressed confidence that India’s maritime and defence sectors will continue to strengthen national security, economic growth, and global standing.
