New Delhi/Reykjavik, June 26: India has taken a significant step towards expanding the global footprint of its world-famous mangoes with the successful organisation of the first-ever Indian Mango Promotion Events in Iceland, introducing Icelandic consumers and businesses to some of India’s finest mango varieties.
The promotional events were jointly organised by the Embassy of India in Reykjavik and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) on June 24 in Reykjavik and June 25 in Akureyri, marking a new chapter in agricultural trade relations between India and Iceland.
Showcasing India’s Finest Mango Varieties
Visitors at the events sampled four of India’s premium mango varieties—Dasheri, Chausa, Langra and Kesar—which attracted widespread appreciation for their distinctive taste, rich aroma and superior quality.
The initiative was designed to promote India’s premium horticultural products while creating new opportunities for Indian mango exporters in the Icelandic market.
Strengthening Bilateral Trade
Speaking at the event, Ambassador R. Ravindra highlighted India’s rich mango heritage and emphasized the country’s reputation for producing some of the world’s finest mango varieties. He also underlined the growing potential for increasing Indian mango exports to Iceland.
Representing the Government of Iceland, Sveinn K. Einarsson, Director of Trade Agreements at Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, noted that the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) could play an important role in facilitating greater imports of Indian agricultural products, including mangoes.
Ólafur Stephensen, Secretary General of the Icelandic Federation of Trade, observed that Icelandic businesses are showing increasing interest in strengthening commercial ties with India and identified fresh agricultural products as an area with significant growth potential.
India’s Leadership in Mango Production
During the programme, Anisha Tomar, Second Secretary at the Embassy of India, presented an overview of India’s mango industry, highlighting the country’s position as the world’s largest producer of mangoes.
The presentation also outlined several initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to enhance mango exports through improved quality standards, better market access, export facilitation and international promotional campaigns.
Strong Industry Participation
The promotional events witnessed participation from importers, representatives of Icelandic businesses, diplomats and officials from Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, providing a valuable platform for interaction between exporters and potential buyers.
The programme aimed to strengthen commercial partnerships while promoting India’s high-quality agricultural produce in the Nordic region.
Expanding Opportunities in the Icelandic Market
According to official information, Iceland currently sources most of its mango imports from countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Cambodia, Ghana and Peru. In 2025, the country imported mangoes worth approximately USD 3.3 million, with around USD 1 million of imports coming from Thailand alone.
Interactions with local consumers during the promotion indicated a strong preference for mangoes, particularly for use in smoothies, desserts and fruit salads, suggesting promising market opportunities for premium Indian varieties.
Boosting India’s Agricultural Exports
The successful organisation of India’s first dedicated mango promotion campaign in Iceland reflects the country’s continued efforts to diversify export destinations for agricultural products and strengthen trade relationships with new international markets.
By introducing Icelandic consumers and importers to India’s diverse range of premium mangoes, the initiative is expected to contribute to expanding India’s fresh fruit exports while reinforcing the growing economic partnership between India and Iceland.
