Operation Amistad: India Dispatches Army Medical Team and Advanced Field Hospital to Earthquake-Hit Venezuela

New Delhi, June 26: Demonstrating its growing role as a global humanitarian responder, India has launched Operation Amistad, dispatching a specialised Indian Army medical contingent and an advanced modular field hospital to earthquake-devastated northern Venezuela to support emergency relief and life-saving medical operations.
The medical contingent, drawn from the 60 Para Field Hospital of the Indian Army, departed from Hindon Air Force Station aboard two Indian Air Force transport aircraft on Friday afternoon and is currently en route to Venezuela.
India Extends Humanitarian Assistance
The contingent comprises 41 highly trained personnel, including nine medical officers, who are equipped to provide comprehensive emergency healthcare services in the disaster-hit region.
Their mission includes:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Trauma and critical care
- Life-saving surgical procedures
- Intensive medical support
- Public health assistance
- Disaster response healthcare
The deployment comes in response to the powerful earthquake that recently struck northern Venezuela, causing widespread destruction and creating an urgent need for international humanitarian assistance.
Six Tonnes of Medical Relief Supplies
The Indian medical mission is transporting approximately six tonnes of medical equipment, medicines and humanitarian relief supplies, provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery in the affected areas.
These supplies are expected to support field hospitals, emergency surgeries, trauma care and treatment of earthquake survivors during the critical post-disaster period.
BHISHM Cube: India’s Indigenous Disaster Medical Innovation
A key highlight of Operation Amistad is the deployment of the BHISHM Cube (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita & Maitri) under India’s Aarogya Maitri Project.
The BHISHM Cube represents one of India’s most advanced indigenous humanitarian medical innovations. Designed as a rapidly deployable modular healthcare facility, it can be assembled quickly into a fully functional field hospital capable of delivering advanced medical care under disaster conditions.
The system includes:
- Advanced trauma care facilities
- Emergency operating theatres
- Intensive care support
- Portable ventilators
- Patient monitoring systems
- Diagnostic equipment
- Surgical instruments
- Oxygen generation and delivery systems
- Independent power generation capability
Once operational, the BHISHM Cube can provide comprehensive treatment for up to 200 patients, significantly enhancing emergency response capabilities in disaster zones where conventional healthcare infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.
