U.S. Backs Venezuela’s Democratic Transition, Welcomes Political Reconciliation Efforts

The United States has welcomed a new political initiative announced by Venezuela’s 2015 National Assembly, led by Dinorah Figuera, and the Venezuelan interim government, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening democratic governance and promoting national recovery.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Department of State on July 16, both sides have agreed to launch a joint agenda beginning August 1, aimed at advancing political stability, democratic reforms and institutional rebuilding in Venezuela.
Washington said the latest announcement builds upon discussions held between representatives of the two sides on June 18, reflecting continued efforts to bridge political differences through dialogue and cooperation.
The United States praised the commitment shown by the participating leaders to reinforce democratic institutions, improve the country’s electoral framework and restore conditions that would allow broader political participation. U.S. officials described these measures as essential for creating a transparent and credible democratic process.
The State Department also noted that the recent devastating earthquakes in Venezuela have highlighted the urgent need for national unity, effective governance and resilient public institutions capable of addressing humanitarian and reconstruction challenges.
Reaffirming its position, the United States said it would continue supporting Venezuelan-led initiatives that encourage peaceful political dialogue and help pave the way for a democratic electoral transition. It also reiterated its commitment to working alongside the Venezuelan people as the country recovers from recent natural disasters and undertakes long-term rebuilding efforts.
The announcement reflects Washington’s continued emphasis on a peaceful, democratic and inclusive political process, while encouraging Venezuelan stakeholders to pursue institutional reforms through dialogue rather than confrontation.
