Brussels, August 31, 2026: The European Union has renewed its call for diplomatic efforts to ease tensions involving Iran, restore stability in the region and safeguard the movement of vessels through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The EU has reiterated concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missile activities and actions that it considers destabilising in the region and Europe. It has also raised concerns regarding Iran’s military support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict and the situation surrounding violence and repression within Iran.
Diplomacy Remains Central
The European Union has stressed that diplomatic engagement remains essential for finding a peaceful resolution. Brussels has linked progress through dialogue with wider efforts to improve regional security and ensure uninterrupted and safe maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
Economic Measures Continue
The EU has maintained economic and financial restrictions against Iran as part of its broader strategy. The measures are intended to limit access to international economic and financial channels that Brussels believes could be used to support activities threatening regional and international security.
The bloc has also indicated that additional measures could be considered if necessary, particularly to protect its security interests and freedom of navigation.
Pressure Alongside Negotiations
At the same time, the EU has welcomed efforts aimed at encouraging Iran to move towards negotiations and address activities regarded by European authorities as destabilising.
Additional economic pressure, including measures associated with the US-led Operation Economic Outcast, has also been cited as part of the broader effort to encourage diplomatic engagement.
Coordination with International Partners
The EU plans to continue working closely with the United States, G7 countries and other international partners. The stated objective is to combine diplomatic efforts with measures aimed at preventing further escalation and supporting greater stability across the region.
The latest European position comes as G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meet in Asheville, United States, on August 31 and September 1.
