India Introduces DIGIPIN, Adding a Precise Digital Layer to Traditional PIN Codes

New Delhi: India is taking another step towards modernising its addressing infrastructure with the introduction of DIGIPIN, a digital location-based addressing system developed to provide a much more precise geographic reference than the conventional postal PIN code.
Importantly, DIGIPIN does not replace the existing six-digit PIN code. Instead, it is designed to work alongside the traditional postal addressing system as an additional digital location layer.
What Is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN is a 10-character alphanumeric code linked to a specific geographical location. India has been divided into grids of approximately 4 metres × 4 metres, with a unique code assigned to each grid.
The system has been developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO). Its objective is to create a standardised digital reference connecting physical locations with digital services.
PIN Code vs DIGIPIN
The traditional PIN code identifies a relatively broad postal area, locality or delivery zone.
DIGIPIN, by contrast, provides a much more precise geographical reference.

This distinction could make location identification considerably easier in areas where conventional addresses are difficult to interpret.

How to Find Your DIGIPIN
India Post has provided an online tool through which users can identify the DIGIPIN associated with their location.

Users can access the map, identify their location and obtain the corresponding DIGIPIN. India Post says the system does not require users to create an account to retrieve a DIGIPIN.
It Does Not Replace Your Existing Address
There is an important distinction that users should understand.
DIGIPIN is not a replacement for a complete postal address or PIN code. It is intended to provide an additional digital representation of a geographical location.
Therefore, information such as the house number, street, locality, city and existing PIN code will continue to have relevance.
DIGIPIN also identifies a location rather than a person. Multiple people living or working at the same location would not necessarily have separate DIGIPINs simply because they are different individuals.
Towards a Digital Addressing Ecosystem
India Post describes DIGIPIN as a potential foundational layer for a broader digital addressing ecosystem. Its applications could extend to logistics, navigation, emergency response, governance and various public and private services.
The system could become particularly valuable when different organisations begin integrating precise geographic references into their digital platforms.
A New Digital Layer for India’s Address System
India’s six-digit PIN code transformed postal administration by creating defined delivery zones across the country. DIGIPIN represents a different approach, adding precise geographic intelligence to the existing addressing framework.
Its long-term impact will depend on how extensively government agencies, postal and logistics operators, emergency services, e-commerce companies and other service providers adopt the system.
For now, DIGIPIN should be viewed not as the end of the PIN code era, but as a new digital layer designed to make India’s addressing ecosystem more precise, standardised and technology-driven.
