Kolkata, May 14, 2026:
Amid growing speculation surrounding a possible Google data centre or artificial intelligence infrastructure project in West Bengal, no official Google press release has yet confirmed the establishment of a data centre in the state. However, industry discussions and recent media reports have intensified interest around the possibility of a future large-scale technology investment in eastern India.
Recent reports indicated that discussions may be taking place between stakeholders regarding a potential technology hub focused on cloud computing, AI infrastructure, and digital services in West Bengal. Yet, Google’s officially published announcements currently confirm only its major AI infrastructure investments in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
According to official Google statements, the company has announced a $15 billion investment between 2026 and 2030 for establishing its first AI hub in India at Visakhapatnam. The project includes:
- Gigawatt-scale AI data centre infrastructure, International subsea cable connectivity, Expanded fibre-optic networks,
- Partnerships with AdaniConneX and Airtel Nxtra.
Google described the Vizag initiative as its “first AI hub in India,” signaling the company’s aggressive push toward building India-centric AI and cloud infrastructure.
Another official Google announcement highlighted that the Andhra Pradesh project aims to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem through advanced compute infrastructure and global digital connectivity.
No Official West Bengal Confirmation Yet
Despite increasing public discussion, neither Google nor the Government of India has publicly announced:
- Any signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Final land allocation, Construction timeline, Regulatory approval,
- Or formal project confirmation for West Bengal.
Therefore, as of now, any proposed Google-related data centre or AI infrastructure project in the state remains at the exploratory or discussion stage.
Bengal’s Push to Become an AI and Data Infrastructure Hub
The Government of West Bengal has nevertheless been actively promoting the state as an emerging destination for:
- Artificial intelligence infrastructure, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), Cloud computing, Digital services, Hyperscale data centres.
Under the state’s proposed Silicon Valley project in New Town, Kolkata, officials have projected investments worth nearly ₹30,000 crore in the digital infrastructure sector. The initiative aims to attract both domestic and international technology companies into eastern India’s growing digital economy ecosystem.
State officials previously indicated that multiple private companies had already received land allocations within the Silicon Valley project area, while West Bengal continues expanding its digital and IT infrastructure capabilities.
What a Google Investment Could Mean for West Bengal
Industry experts believe that if a Google-backed AI hub or data centre project is eventually approved in West Bengal, it could significantly alter the state’s financial, technological, and industrial trajectory.
1. Major Economic Boost
A hyperscale AI or cloud infrastructure facility could generate substantial economic activity through:
- Technology sector expansion, Growth in digital services exports, Increased state tax revenues, Real estate demand,
- Commercial infrastructure development.
Such projects typically attract long-term institutional and private investments into surrounding regions.
2. Employment Generation
Large technology infrastructure projects create both direct and indirect employment opportunities across sectors such as:
- Software engineering, Data operations, Cybersecurity, Electrical infrastructure, Telecommunications, Construction,
- Facility management, logistics, and maintenance services. Even the food and hospitality industry, transport and Cab services will have a major impact.
Experts suggest that thousands of skilled and semi-skilled jobs could emerge if large-scale AI infrastructure develops in eastern India.
3. Global Investment Confidence
A confirmed Google project could serve as a major international confidence signal for West Bengal’s investment climate. Analysts believe such a move may encourage:
- Additional multinational corporations, Venture capital investments, Startup incubators, Research partnerships,
- International technology collaborations.
This could strengthen Kolkata’s competitiveness against major Indian technology centres such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai.
4. Infrastructure Modernization
Hyperscale data centres require:
- Reliable high-capacity electricity, Advanced fibre-optic connectivity, Strong cybersecurity systems, Renewable energy integration,Modern logistics and urban planning.
As a result, the supporting infrastructure surrounding such facilities often undergoes rapid modernization.
5. Strategic Advantage for Eastern India
West Bengal holds several strategic advantages that could support future digital infrastructure investments:
- Gateway connectivity to Northeast India, Proximity to Southeast Asian markets, Bay of Bengal cable connectivity potential,
- Large technical and engineering workforce, Presence of educational and research institutions.
Experts believe a major technology investment could reposition West Bengal as eastern India’s primary AI and cloud infrastructure gateway.
Challenges Remain
Despite the optimism, analysts caution that long-term success would depend on:
- Ease of doing business, Policy stability, Regulatory transparency, Reliable power supply, Land acquisition clarity,
- Skilled workforce development, Strong cybersecurity, and data governance standards.
At present, however, there is no officially approved Google data centre project in West Bengal, according to currently available Google-approved announcements and corporate press releases. Any future development would require formal confirmation from both the company and the relevant government authorities.
