MLA Assures Support for Better Hemophilia Care After Interacting with Patients and Families

In a significant initiative aimed at improving healthcare support for people living with hemophilia, the Hemophilia Society – Durgapur Chapter organized a Free Inhibitor Screening Test Camp along with a Physiotherapy Camp, bringing together patients from several districts across West Bengal.
The programme witnessed the participation of 32 persons with hemophilia, who received free inhibitor screening tests, physiotherapy consultations and comprehensive health assessments conducted by medical experts.
The event was attended by Shri Lakhan Chandra Ghorui, Hon’ble MLA from Paschim Bardhaman, Dr. Prithvi Raj Bhowmik, Head of the Blood Bank at The Mission Hospital, and Shri Ashis Kumar, an experienced physiotherapist from Lucknow specializing in hemophilia rehabilitation.
Importance of Early Inhibitor Detection
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Prithvi Raj Bhowmik highlighted the crucial role of inhibitor screening in the effective management of hemophilia. He explained that inhibitors are antibodies that may develop in some patients, reducing the effectiveness of clotting factor treatment and making bleeding episodes more difficult to control.
He advised that every person with hemophilia should undergo inhibitor screening at least twice every year, or more frequently if recommended by their treating physician. According to Dr. Bhowmik, early diagnosis allows doctors to modify treatment plans promptly, helping prevent severe bleeding complications, minimize joint damage and improve long-term health outcomes.
MLA Expresses Commitment to Hemophilia Community
Speaking during the programme, Shri Lakhan Chandra Ghorui said the event had given him his first comprehensive understanding of hemophilia and the challenges faced by affected families.
The MLA said he was deeply touched after listening to the experiences shared by patients and their family members regarding repeated bleeding episodes, lifelong treatment requirements, financial burdens and the emotional challenges associated with the disorder.
He assured the gathering that he would extend every possible support to strengthen healthcare services for the hemophilia community.
Shri Ghorui requested Shri Ajoy Roy, Secretary of the Hemophilia Society – Durgapur Chapter, to submit a detailed memorandum outlining the key issues, treatment gaps and infrastructure requirements related to hemophilia care.
He further informed participants that, after reviewing the memorandum, he would take up the matter with the Hon’ble Health Minister of West Bengal to explore measures for improving treatment facilities, rehabilitation services and access to specialized healthcare for patients across the state.
The MLA also interacted personally with several mothers of children affected by hemophilia, patiently listening to their concerns and assuring them that he would work towards creating better opportunities and healthcare support for their children.
Regular Screening Can Save Lives
Speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, Shri Ajoy Roy, Secretary of the Hemophilia Society – Durgapur Chapter, emphasized that inhibitor screening remains one of the most essential diagnostic investigations for people living with hemophilia.
He urged patients and caregivers to strictly follow medical advice and undergo regular screening, noting that timely identification of inhibitors enables doctors to initiate appropriate treatment without delay, significantly reducing complications and improving quality of life.
Shri Roy also expressed sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble MLA for his compassionate interaction with patients and his assurance of support for strengthening hemophilia care in Paschim Bardhaman and across West Bengal.
Collective Effort Towards Better Healthcare
The Hemophilia Society – Durgapur Chapter acknowledged the dedicated contributions of doctors, physiotherapists, volunteers, supporters and participants whose collective efforts ensured the successful organization of the camp.
The society reiterated its commitment to raising awareness about hemophilia, promoting early diagnosis, expanding access to specialized treatment and improving rehabilitation services for people living with the inherited bleeding disorder.
Healthcare experts at the programme stressed that awareness, early diagnosis, regular monitoring and timely medical intervention remain the cornerstones of improving health outcomes for individuals affected by hemophilia.
