Washington, D.C., August 5, 2026: The United States has urged the Organization of American States (OAS) to take coordinated regional action in response to the political situation in Nicaragua, calling on member nations to defend democratic principles and regional stability.

Speaking at a Special Meeting of the OAS Permanent Council, Senior Bureau Official for Western Hemisphere Affairs Michael Kozak said the challenges posed by Nicaragua’s current leadership require a united response from countries across the Americas rather than unilateral measures.

During the meeting, the United States introduced a draft resolution, jointly sponsored by Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, and Paraguay, proposing the convening of a Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs. The proposed gathering is intended to allow OAS member states to determine an appropriate collective response to the situation in Nicaragua.

U.S. officials emphasized that the responsibility for addressing developments in Nicaragua should be shared by the broader regional community. According to the American delegation, the Organization of American States has an important role in fostering dialogue and coordinated action among its member countries when democratic governance and regional security are under strain.

The United States also called on the OAS to reaffirm its commitment to democratic values and support the aspirations of the Nicaraguan people for a peaceful and democratic future. Officials stressed that the regional organization has an opportunity to demonstrate its relevance by working collectively to uphold the principles enshrined in the Inter-American democratic framework.

The discussion at the Permanent Council reflects continuing international concern over political developments in Nicaragua and highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts within the OAS to build consensus on a regional approach.
