Bhubaneswar, 16 August 2026: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar observed India’s 80th Independence Day with a series of programmes highlighting patriotism, youth empowerment, scientific innovation, environmental sustainability and the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
The celebrations centred on the themes “150 years of Vande Mataram” and “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047.” IIT Bhubaneswar Director Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar hoisted the National Flag and addressed members of the institute community.
New Initiatives to Strengthen Education and Innovation
Prof. Karmalkar emphasised the importance of enabling young people to transform academic knowledge and research into practical solutions for societal challenges.
The institute is planning a Centre for Teaching-Learning and Communication, aimed at promoting research-based teaching methods and strengthening students’ communication, employability, entrepreneurship and leadership skills.
A Centre for Mineral Processing is also proposed, bringing together scientific research, engineering and industry to encourage more effective utilisation of Odisha’s mineral resources.
Research Focus on Agriculture and Rural Economy
The institute’s Center for Techno-Economic Research in Agriculture and Rural Sectors (C-TERARS) is working on research and development initiatives focused on improving crop productivity, extending the shelf life of agricultural products and enhancing farmers’ incomes.
These efforts underline IIT Bhubaneswar’s emphasis on connecting academic research with practical challenges in agriculture and rural development.
Sustainability Gains Prominence
Environmental sustainability formed another important part of the institute’s development efforts.
IIT Bhubaneswar has undertaken initiatives including sustainable waste-management practices and a 1 MWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system. These measures have contributed to the institute securing a place among the Top 10 institutions in the National Green University Ranking (NGUR) 2026.
NCC March-Past and Cultural Celebrations
The Independence Day programme featured a march-past by the institute’s security unit and National Cadet Corps (NCC). Students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Bhubaneswar, also presented performances during the celebrations.
Registrar Shri Bamadev Acharya, Deans, senior faculty members and institute officials attended the programme.
The celebrations continued into the evening, when the Student Gymkhana organised a cultural programme featuring performances by students and members of the campus community.
Cycling Promoted as a Student Skill
IIT Bhubaneswar has made cycling a mandatory skill for its students. As part of its Independence Day tradition, the Women Welfare Committee conducted its annual cycling workshop, with around 30 students participating.
The initiative combines student development with the promotion of sustainable and healthy modes of mobility on campus.
Campus Joins Har Ghar Tiranga
Members of the IIT Bhubaneswar community also participated in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, displaying the National Flag as a symbol of patriotism and respect for the Tricolour.
Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Bhubaneswar, separately marked the 80th Independence Day with enthusiasm.
The celebrations reflected IIT Bhubaneswar’s broader approach to nation building—bringing together education, research, innovation, environmental responsibility and youth participation while strengthening its contribution towards the goal of Viksit Bharat@2047.
