IRCTC Sets New Record With Over 20 Lakh Tickets Booked in a Single Day

By Suman Munshi | IBG NEWS

New Delhi, September 11, 2026: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has achieved a new milestone in online railway ticketing, registering 20,06,353 ticket bookings on September 7, 2026—the highest single-day booking figure recorded by the organisation so far.

The record came amid strong festive-season demand under the Advance Reservation Period (ARP). IRCTC said the achievement reflects a series of technological and operational improvements introduced to strengthen the country’s online railway reservation infrastructure. Around 89% of reserved railway tickets are currently booked through online channels.

NGeT Handles Heavy Booking Volumes

The upgraded Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system demonstrated its ability to manage exceptionally high traffic. On September 8, the platform processed another 19,50,699 tickets, indicating that the system continued to operate effectively under sustained festive-season demand.

The previous festive-season single-day record stood at 18,40,203 tickets, registered on August 19, 2025.

IRCTC said the booking pattern also shows that the majority of reservations are not completed during the first hour. Only around 8.43% to 14.14% of daily bookings take place between 8 AM and 9 AM, while more than 85% are completed later in the day. The most intense demand is consistently seen during the first 15 minutes of the booking window.

Infrastructure Capacity Strengthened

A major component of the upgrade has been the NGeT Refresh programme. IRCTC said the capacity of the overall ecosystem has been increased to approximately twice its earlier level through the deployment of new servers.

Hardware enhancement has been complemented by software optimisation and architectural improvements, providing additional capacity to handle large volumes of simultaneous booking requests.

Redesigned Interface Improves Passenger Experience

IRCTC introduced the beta version of its new user interface on July 15, 2026. The redesigned platform provides a more streamlined booking experience, with availability information for different classes displayed in a consolidated manner.

Passengers can view and compare options such as Sleeper, AC 3 Tier and AC 2 Tier on a single screen, reducing navigation requirements during the booking process.

Anti-BOT Technology Tackles Malicious Traffic

IRCTC has also strengthened the security and performance of its ticketing infrastructure through Anti-BOT and Content Delivery Network (CDN) measures.

According to IRCTC, Anti-BOT technology has helped reduce malicious BOT traffic by 55% to 65% in recent months. CDN deployment for static content has also reduced the load on the NGeT platform, helping provide smoother access to genuine and verified users.

The corporation’s Network Security Team is simultaneously taking action against fraudulent websites and mobile applications that impersonate IRCTC.

Agents Barred From Initial 10-Minute Booking Window

To ensure a more equitable booking process, authorised ticketing agents—including YTSKs, RTSAs and IRCTC Agents—are prohibited from booking ARP tickets during the first 10 minutes, from 8:00 AM to 8:10 AM.

IRCTC also reiterated that Aadhaar-authenticated users alone are permitted to make bookings during the opening ARP window, a measure that came into effect on October 12, 2025.

The NGeT system has reportedly handled between 1.33 crore and 1.74 crore logins and 17 lakh to 20 lakh bookings on each ARP opening day.

Large-Scale Action Against Misuse

IRCTC said its continuing efforts to curb misuse of the reservation system have resulted in:

  • 3.04 crore user IDs deactivated
  • 6.33 crore IDs placed under revalidation
  • 16,041 suspicious email domains blocked
  • 592 complaints filed on the Cyber Crime Portal
  • Complaints covering 4.21 lakh suspicious PNRs

IRCTC Says Platform Remained Operational

Despite the unprecedented level of concurrent demand, IRCTC said there was no failure or outage of the NGeT platform during the record booking period.

The corporation maintained that the system remained operational while processing a very high volume of simultaneous requests, with measures aimed at ensuring secure and equitable access for passengers.

IRCTC said it will continue to introduce technological and operational upgrades to strengthen India’s online railway ticket-booking system and improve reliability, security and passenger convenience.
