PM Modi Chairs Semiconductor Roundtable, Calls for Greater Industry Participation in India’s Next Phase of Growth

New Delhi, September 16, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level Semiconductor Roundtable with leading global and Indian industry executives at Seva Teerth, focusing on strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem and expanding the country’s capabilities across the technology value chain.
The meeting highlighted the importance of closer cooperation between the government and semiconductor industry as India moves into what the Prime Minister described as a new phase of growth and opportunity in the sector.
PM Calls for Stronger Industry-Government Partnership
Prime Minister Modi emphasised the need for greater participation from industry in skilling, innovation and emerging technologies, particularly areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing.
He pointed to India’s expanding talent base, growing adoption of technology and improving infrastructure as important foundations for future development. Referring to the target of training one crore people in AI, the Prime Minister said the country’s talent pool, combined with the expertise of global technology companies, could generate significant opportunities.
Modi also said India should aim to become an early leader in emerging technologies, while noting that the semiconductor sector has made considerable progress and is transitioning from foundational development towards greater scale.
Focus on Policy and Technology Needs
The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining a predictable and responsive policy environment for the semiconductor industry.
He stressed that policies should evolve alongside technological developments and changing industry requirements. Industry leaders were invited to provide suggestions on policy and administrative measures that could further strengthen the sector.
Modi also encouraged semiconductor companies to participate actively in the next phase of India’s semiconductor development.
CEOs Highlight India’s Semiconductor Potential
According to the government, participating CEOs and industry representatives welcomed the efforts made to expand India’s semiconductor capabilities.
The industry representatives highlighted progress in areas including manufacturing, semiconductor design, infrastructure and talent development. They also expressed confidence in opportunities emerging under ISM 2.0 and in India’s potential to develop capabilities across the semiconductor value chain.
This includes areas such as:
- Semiconductor manufacturing
- Research and development
- Advanced semiconductor technologies
- Design and engineering
- Supporting industries and infrastructure
- Talent and skills development
The industry representatives also expressed their commitment to contributing to India’s development as a globally competitive semiconductor and technology hub.
Global Semiconductor Industry Leaders Participate
The roundtable brought together senior representatives from a broad cross-section of the global semiconductor ecosystem.
Organisations represented included SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron, FujiFilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semiconductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power and IBM Research, among others.
The participation of companies spanning semiconductor equipment, manufacturing, design, research, materials and supporting technologies underscored the broad industry engagement around India’s semiconductor ambitions.
India’s Semiconductor Push Enters a New Phase
The discussions come as India seeks to expand its role in the global semiconductor ecosystem by developing capabilities ranging from manufacturing and research to advanced technologies and supporting industries.
The government said the interaction provided an opportunity for policymakers and industry leaders to discuss the requirements of the sector and identify areas where closer cooperation could accelerate India’s semiconductor development.
