BAKU, Azerbaijan: The FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival 2026 is introducing a distinctive approach to recognising young footballers, placing collective character, team identity and positive energy at the heart of its Special Awards programme.
Hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, the inaugural event brings together 189 participating teams, with 78 FIFA Member Associations making their FIFA World Cup debut. Beyond competition on the pitch, the festival aims to encourage friendship, cultural exchange and a shared passion for football among young players from across the world.
Unlike traditional football tournaments that often emphasise individual achievements, the Special Awards focus exclusively on teams. There will be no individual honours or Fair Play prize under this initiative. Instead, participating teams will vote for the sides they believe have demonstrated outstanding identity, unity and enthusiasm throughout the festival.
Players Recognise Their Peers
The voting process places the decision directly in the hands of the young footballers. Teams will have access to voting documents in the Athletes’ Village and will be invited to recognise the opponents who have impressed them through their playing style, team spirit and overall conduct during the event.
The initiative is designed to make recognition a reflection of peer appreciation rather than a decision based solely on statistics or assessments by officials. Players who share the same pitches and festival environment will determine which teams best embody the qualities being celebrated.
Three trophies will be presented at the conclusion of the festival. According to the tournament’s award framework, the honours will consist of trophies rather than individual medals.
Three Awards Highlight the Values of Football
1. Distinctive Identity Award
This award recognises teams that demonstrate a clear and consistent personality. Their identity may be reflected in their playing style, shared values, teamwork and behaviour both during matches and in other festival activities.
The honour celebrates the qualities that make a team recognisable beyond its results on the scoreboard.
2. United by Football Award
The United by Football Award celebrates togetherness, cooperation and collective spirit. It recognises teams whose unity is evident through mutual encouragement, coordinated play and positive interactions both on and off the pitch.
The award also considers observations and feedback from people involved in the festival, according to the programme’s stated criteria.
3. Positive Energy Award
The Positive Energy Award acknowledges teams that bring enthusiasm and optimism to the competition. Factors include players’ body language, encouragement from the bench, support for teammates and responses to challenging situations.
The initiative highlights how a team’s attitude can contribute to the atmosphere of a sporting event, regardless of the result of an individual match.
Football as a Bridge Between Cultures
With participants representing football communities from different parts of the world, the festival offers young players opportunities to meet new people, experience different cultures and develop friendships.
Language differences and unfamiliar backgrounds do not necessarily prevent players from connecting. Shared competition, teamwork and a common interest in football can create opportunities for communication and mutual understanding.
The Special Awards seek to recognise these aspects of the game by highlighting teams that demonstrate a strong collective identity, support one another and contribute positively to the wider festival environment.
FIFA Highlights Football’s Global Reach
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasised the significance of the event, pointing to the enthusiasm, competitive spirit, shared experiences and new friendships emerging among the participating teams.
He said the experience further strengthened FIFA’s motivation to expand access to football and create opportunities for young talent around the world.
The festival’s emphasis on participation and collective recognition reflects an approach that extends beyond conventional measures of sporting success. Alongside competition, it places value on how teams interact, represent themselves and contribute to the experience of others.
Beyond Results: Celebrating the Spirit of the Game
The FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival 2026 presents an opportunity to recognise qualities that cannot be measured by goals, assists or match statistics alone. Through its three Special Awards, the event seeks to celebrate distinctive team identities, unity and positive attitudes.
By allowing players to recognise their peers, the initiative gives young footballers a direct role in celebrating the values they experience throughout the competition.
In Baku, the message extends beyond winning and losing: football can bring young people together, encourage lasting friendships and create a shared sense of belonging across national and cultural boundaries.
