Organic colours made by Adivasi women of Jangalmahal to be available for Holi
The Bengal State Government, in collaboration with Jadavpur University, is training Adivasi women of Purulia district (part of the Jangalmahal region) to create organic red, blue and yellow-coloured powders for Holi (abir), from palash (flame-of-the-forest), aparajita (butterfly pea) and genda(marigold) flowers, respectively. These are going to be sold under the Biswa Bangla brand in bamboo containers of two sizes – 250 g (to be priced at Rs 90) and 500 g – from State Government stalls across the State.
Presently, 60 Adivasi women from seven gram panchayats of Purulia have been selected for the project, for which the West Bengal SC ST Development and Finance Corporation (WBSCSTDFC) is spending Rs 15.5 crore. This project has also fulfilled a long-standing demand of the State flower growers’ and flower sellers’ association.
These coloured powders would not be just like any ordinary ones – essential oils derived from these flowers would be mixed with them to create scented abir. The bamboo containers would be manufactured by members of the Kalindi family, traditionally famous in the Jangalmahal region for bamboo crafts.

এবার বাংলার দোল যাত্রাকে রাঙিয়ে দেবে পুরুলিয়ার আদিবাসীদের তৈরি ভেষজ আবির ‘বনপলাশী’।পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের এই উদ্যোগে সাহায্য করছে যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের রসায়ন বিভাগ। তাঁদের প্রশিক্ষণেই আবির তৈরির পদ্ধতি শিখছেন আদিবাসী মহিলারা।
পলাশ, অপরাজিতা, গাঁদা ফুল থেকে তৈরি এই আবির দোলের আগেই চলে আসবে প্রত্যেক সরকারি স্টলে। সব ঠিক থাকলে বিশ্ববাংলা ব্র্যান্ডের নামেই বাঁশের তৈরি পাত্র করে বিক্রি করা হবে এই ভেষজ আবির। আড়াইশো গ্রামের ছোট পাত্রের দাম হবে মাত্র নব্বই টাকা। আর বড় পাত্রে থাকবে ৫০০ গ্রাম আবির।
বর্তমানে সাতটি গ্রাম পঞ্চায়েতের ষাট জন আদিবাসী মহিলাকে প্রশিক্ষণের জন্য বেছে নেওয়া হয়েছে। পশ্চিমবঙ্গ তফশিলি জাতি, তফশিলি উপজাতি উন্নয়ন ও অর্থ নিগমের প্রায় সাড়ে পনেরো লক্ষ টাকায় সূচনা হয়েছে এই প্রকল্প। এই প্রকল্প ফুলচাষিদের দীর্ঘদিনের চাহিদা ও পূরণ করবে।
এই আবির একেবারে পরিবেশবান্ধব।ফুলের নির্যাস থেকেই আবিরে সুগন্ধী মেশানো হবে। আর বাঁশের পাত্র তৈরি করবে জঙ্গলমহলের বাঁশের কাজ করার জন্য বিখ্যাত কালিন্দী পরিবার।
