Global Efforts Amplified on World Asthma Day 2024: Uniting for Asthma Education and Control

Empowering Individuals and Communities through Asthma Education: World Asthma Day 2024 Highlights the Path to Improved Management and Care

Kolkata,7th May,2024– World Asthma Day, observed on the first Tuesday of May each year, is a globally recognized event dedicated to raising awareness about asthma and improving asthma care worldwide. This year, on 7th May 2024, individuals, healthcare professionals, and organizations across the globe will come together to support those affected by asthma, advocate for better treatment and management strategies, and promote asthma-friendly environments as part of World Asthma Day. The theme for World Asthma Day 2024 is “Asthma Education Empowers”, highlighting the importance of educating people with asthma on how to manage their condition effectively and when to seek medical attention.

Asthma, including Bronchial Asthma, is a chronic lung disease characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It affects people of all ages and backgrounds, with millions of individuals worldwide grappling with its impact on their daily lives.

“Bronchial Asthma is a very old lung disease that has been passed down through generations for many years. In 2025, it is estimated that over 100 million people will suffer from Bronchial Asthma. No matter how severe it is, Bronchial Asthma can be controlled, and patients can lead normal lives provided they regularly follow up with their doctors, especially specialists, and take their medicines regularly. The medicines for Bronchial Asthma include injections, tablets, biologics, and inhalers, of which inhalers are the most important as they can provide significant benefit to the patient with minimal harm. Therefore, inhalers in Bronchial Asthma constitute the treatment that can benefit all asthmatics for their entire lives” said Dr. Aratrika Das, Consultant–Pulmonology at NH RN Tagore, Mukundapur.

Similarly, Dr. Arindam Datta, Associate Consultant, Respiratory Medicine & Pulmonary Interventions Narayana Hospital, Howrah conveyed his opinions by stating “On this World Asthma Day, let’s talk about better asthma control. First, let’s accept that asthma is mostly not curable but extremely controllable, and we can live with it without letting it limit our lifestyle. Prevention is better than cure so avoid asthma triggers like dust, smoke, or known allergens if any. ‘Inhaler every day keeps hospitalization away’: your inhaler is the best drug for your asthma, much potent yet much less toxic than any other class of drugs so don’t ditch your inhaler unless your doctor asks you to skip”

The theme for World Asthma Day 2024, “Asthma Education Empowers,” emphasizes the necessity for collective efforts to improve asthma control worldwide. This year’s theme aims to mobilize stakeholders at all levels to prioritize asthma management and support those living with the condition by advocating for access to essential medications and healthcare services, as well as promoting environmental initiatives that reduce asthma triggers.

On World Asthma Day 2024, let us unite in our commitment to raising awareness, promoting effective asthma control strategies, and supporting individuals and families affected by asthma. Together, we can work towards a future where everyone can breathe easier and enjoy optimal respiratory health.
