DRI Cracks Major Gold Smuggling Networks in Eastern and Northeast India; 17 kg Foreign-Origin Gold Worth ₹25 Crore Seized

Ten arrested in coordinated operations across Kolkata and Agartala as authorities intensify crackdown on organised smuggling syndicates

New Delhi/Kolkata/Agartala, June 13, 2026: In a significant operation against organised gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized nearly 17 kilograms of foreign-origin gold valued at approximately ₹25 crore during coordinated raids conducted in Kolkata and Agartala. A total of 10 individuals have been arrested in connection with the operations.

According to official information, DRI officers on June 12 dismantled a smuggling network operating through Kolkata Airport, recovering 11.6 kilograms of foreign-origin gold allegedly being smuggled from Thailand. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth around ₹17 crore.

The operation resulted in the arrest of seven persons, including one woman, who are suspected to be part of the organised smuggling syndicate. Further investigations are underway to identify the wider network and its international links.

In a separate but simultaneous operation in Agartala, DRI officials intercepted another consignment of approximately 5.1 kilograms of foreign-origin gold, valued at nearly ₹8 crore. Authorities stated that the gold was allegedly smuggled through the Tripura sector of the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The Agartala operation was carried out in coordination with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), leading to the arrest of three individuals allegedly involved in the illegal transportation of the precious metal.

With the combined seizures amounting to nearly 17 kilograms of smuggled gold, the operations represent one of the major enforcement actions against organised gold smuggling networks in the Eastern and Northeastern regions of India in recent times.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence continues its investigation to trace the origin, financing channels and interstate or international connections of the syndicates involved. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to strengthening surveillance and enforcement measures to curb the illegal movement of precious metals across India’s borders.
