New Delhi, July 8, 2026: In a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday successfully conducted the flight-test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha.
The test was carried out for a user-defined minimum range of 60 kilometres, during which the guided rocket successfully executed all planned in-flight manoeuvres before striking its designated target with remarkable accuracy. According to DRDO, the rocket followed the predicted flight trajectory with precision, while an array of sophisticated range instruments continuously monitored and recorded its performance throughout the mission.
The successful trial marks another milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to enhance indigenous long-range precision strike capabilities for the Armed Forces.
The Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket has been developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), with technical support from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI). The flight trial was coordinated jointly by the Integrated Test Range (ITR) and the Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE).
A key highlight of the test was the launch of the LRGR from the operational Pinaka launcher, demonstrating the launcher’s capability to deploy multiple variants of the Pinaka rocket system with varying operational ranges without requiring any structural modifications. This versatility is expected to significantly strengthen the operational flexibility of the Indian Army’s artillery units.
Congratulating the scientists, engineers, industry partners, and the Indian Army, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh described the successful test as a major achievement in India’s journey towards self-reliance in advanced defence technologies. He said the accomplishment reflects the country’s growing expertise in the indigenous design and development of long-range guided rocket systems.
Defence Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, as well as Chairman of DRDO, Rajesh Kumar Singh, closely monitored the trial and commended all teams involved for successfully completing the mission.
The latest success further reinforces India’s commitment to strengthening its indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem under the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, while enhancing the operational capabilities of the country’s precision-guided artillery systems.

Defence Analyst’s Perspective: Pinaka LRGR Strengthens India’s Long-Range Precision Firepower
The successful flight-test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) represents a significant advancement in India’s indigenous artillery modernisation programme. Unlike conventional area-saturation rockets, the LRGR combines extended range with precision guidance, enabling the Indian Army to engage high-value military targets while minimising collateral damage.

Why the Test Matters
From a strategic perspective, the LRGR bridges the operational gap between conventional artillery systems and tactical missile platforms. Its improved range allows the Indian Army to engage critical enemy infrastructure, command posts, ammunition depots and logistics nodes deep inside hostile territory without exposing frontline forces.
The precision guidance package significantly enhances first-round hit probability, reducing ammunition expenditure while increasing battlefield effectiveness. The ability to launch both existing and long-range Pinaka variants from the same launcher also simplifies logistics, lowers lifecycle costs and improves operational flexibility.
Enhancing Indigenous Defence Capability
The Pinaka programme has become one of India’s most successful indigenous artillery projects. Continuous upgrades—from the original Pinaka Mk-I to the Guided Pinaka, Enhanced Pinaka and now the Long Range Guided Rocket—demonstrate DRDO’s capability to develop world-class rocket artillery systems that can compete with leading international platforms.
Strategic Significance
The successful trial comes at a time when long-range precision strike capabilities are becoming increasingly important in modern warfare. The LRGR provides the Indian Armed Forces with the capability to conduct accurate stand-off strikes while maintaining high mobility and rapid deployment.
The indigenous development of advanced guidance systems, propulsion technologies and launch platforms also supports the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, reducing dependence on imported long-range artillery systems and strengthening the country’s defence industrial base.
Defence analysts believe that once inducted in significant numbers, the Pinaka LRGR will substantially enhance the Indian Army’s long-range firepower, making it one of the most capable indigenous rocket artillery systems in Asia.
