8th India–Japan Defence Policy Dialogue in Tokyo Reinforces Maritime Cooperation, Defence Technology and Regional Stability

India and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic defence cooperation and preserving peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific during the 8th India–Japan Defence Policy Dialogue, held in Tokyo on Monday. The high-level engagement reflects the growing strategic convergence between Asia’s two major democracies amid an increasingly complex regional security landscape.
The Indian delegation was led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, while the Japanese side was headed by Vice Minister of Defence for International Affairs Kano Koji. The dialogue reviewed the progress achieved since the previous policy meeting and charted a roadmap for expanding bilateral defence cooperation under the framework of the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
Comprehensive Review of Defence Cooperation
The two sides undertook an extensive review of ongoing defence engagements spanning military exchanges, maritime cooperation, joint exercises, institutional interactions, defence technology collaboration, capacity building and cooperation between the armed forces of both nations.
Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening collaboration in maritime security, reflecting the growing strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific, one of the world’s most vital economic and maritime corridors.
Officials also explored opportunities to enhance defence industrial partnerships and expand cooperation in advanced technologies that are expected to shape future military capabilities.
Emerging Technologies Take Centre Stage
Recognising the changing nature of modern warfare, India and Japan agreed to deepen cooperation in several emerging strategic domains, including:
- Defence industrial collaboration
- Advanced defence technologies
- Cyber security
- Space security
- Maritime technologies
- Innovation-driven military capabilities
Both countries acknowledged that technological cooperation will become a critical pillar of their defence partnership as future security challenges increasingly extend beyond conventional military operations.
Shared Vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific
One of the key outcomes of the dialogue was the reaffirmation of both countries’ commitment to maintaining a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific founded on respect for international law, freedom of navigation and peaceful resolution of disputes.
India and Japan reiterated that closer strategic coordination is essential for preserving regional stability and ensuring secure sea lanes that support global trade and economic prosperity.
The discussions reflected the growing alignment between New Delhi and Tokyo on regional and global security issues as geopolitical competition intensifies across the Indo-Pacific.
Preparing for High-Level Strategic Engagements
The meeting also reviewed preparations for upcoming ministerial-level engagements, including the next India–Japan 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, expected later this year.
Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining regular high-level consultations as an essential mechanism for strengthening defence diplomacy and accelerating strategic cooperation.
Defence Secretary Meets Japanese Defence Minister
Earlier in the day, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh called on Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, conveying greetings from Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh.
During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed the growing momentum of the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
The Defence Secretary also extended an invitation from the Indian Defence Minister to his Japanese counterpart to visit India at the earliest opportunity, signalling both countries’ intent to maintain sustained political and military engagement.
Tribute to Japan’s Fallen Soldiers
As part of his official visit, the Defence Secretary paid homage at the Japan Self-Defense Forces Memorial Stone in Tokyo, laying a wreath in honour of members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces who made the supreme sacrifice in service of their nation.
The gesture reflected the mutual respect shared between the armed forces of the two countries and underscored the importance of military traditions in strengthening bilateral defence relations.
