U.S., Philippines Mark 75 Years of Mutual Defense Treaty
Washington reaffirms commitment to alliance and deeper economic cooperation with Manila

Washington, August 29, 2026: The United States and the Philippines have marked the 75th anniversary of their Mutual Defense Treaty, reaffirming the longstanding security partnership between the two countries.
The treaty, signed in 1951, has remained a central pillar of the U.S.-Philippines alliance and continues to underpin cooperation on defence and security matters.
The anniversary comes during another important milestone in bilateral relations, as 2026 also marks 80 years of diplomatic ties between Washington and Manila. Over eight decades, the relationship has developed through shared historical experiences, cooperation and security commitments.
Longstanding Security Partnership
The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to the defence and security obligations established under the Mutual Defense Treaty. Washington described the agreement as an enduring foundation of the two countries’ alliance.
The treaty has played an important role in shaping the broader strategic relationship between the United States and the Philippines, particularly in the context of efforts to support a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Focus on Economic Cooperation
Alongside defence and security cooperation, the United States is seeking to expand the economic dimension of its partnership with the Philippines.
Washington highlighted initiatives such as the Luzon Economic Corridor, which is intended to support deeper economic engagement and strengthen connectivity and investment opportunities.
The emphasis on economic cooperation reflects the broader evolution of the bilateral relationship beyond traditional security ties.
Looking Towards the Future
As the two countries look beyond the 75th anniversary of the treaty and towards the next phase of their relationship, the United States has expressed its intention to further strengthen ties with the Philippines.
The continuing partnership is expected to encompass defence, security, economic cooperation and people-to-people relations, building on decades of diplomatic engagement.
The 75th anniversary therefore represents not only a commemoration of a historic defence agreement but also an opportunity for Washington and Manila to reaffirm their commitment to a long-term strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific.
