Kolkata Metro’s Orange Line Reaches Key Milestone with First Trial Run on Beleghata–IT Centre Section

Kolkata’s expanding Metro network has taken another significant step forward with the successful completion of the first trial run on the Beleghata–IT Centre section of the Kavi Subhash–Jai Hind Bimanbandar Metro Corridor, popularly known as the Orange Line.
The trial was conducted on October 10, 2026, under the technical supervision and expertise of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) authorities.
The development marks an important phase in the advancement of the Orange Line project, which is expected to strengthen Kolkata’s urban transport infrastructure and improve connectivity across key parts of the city.
CBTC System Trials Begin
The inaugural trial run also signals the commencement of testing for the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, an advanced railway signalling technology designed to support train movement management and operational safety.
CBTC technology enables continuous communication between trains and control systems, helping optimise train operations and improve the management of train intervals. Its implementation and testing form an important part of preparing the corridor for future passenger services.
A Step Towards Better Urban Connectivity
The Beleghata–IT Centre section represents a major milestone in a Metro expansion project that has long been anticipated by Kolkata residents. The successful trial run marks progress towards the next stages of technical evaluation and operational preparation.
Further testing and the necessary safety clearances will be important before passenger services can begin on the section. An official opening date and passenger-service commencement schedule have not been specified in the information released about the trial.
The Orange Line is part of Kolkata’s broader efforts to expand rapid transit facilities and provide commuters with improved public transport options. Its progress is expected to be closely watched by residents and daily passengers awaiting enhanced Metro connectivity.
