Remembering the Historic Events of 1612
Russia observes National Unity Day every year on November 4 to commemorate the liberation of Moscow from foreign intervention in 1612.
The historical episode is associated with the people’s militia led by Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, whose mobilisation efforts played a significant role in the struggle to restore Russian political authority during a turbulent period in the country’s history.
Minin, a merchant from Nizhny Novgorod, helped organise financial and popular support for the militia, while Pozharsky assumed military leadership. Their combined efforts became an enduring symbol of collective action and national solidarity.
The monument to Minin and Pozharsky, located in Red Square near St Basil’s Cathedral, serves as a prominent reminder of this historical chapter.
National Unity Day: A Symbol of Collective Identity
Established as a national public holiday in 2005, National Unity Day commemorates the historical events of 1612 and highlights themes of solidarity, shared heritage and cooperation among the country’s diverse communities.
The annual observance includes official ceremonies, cultural programmes and public events across Russia.
The floral tribute at Red Square formed part of the national commemorations, bringing together representatives of religious, social, educational, volunteer and veterans’ organisations to mark the occasion.
