IGNCA and NCRTC Join Hands to Bring Art, Culture and Heritage to Namo Bharat Stations

New Delhi, October 8, 2026: Commuters travelling on the Namo Bharat corridor will soon have an opportunity to experience India’s diverse artistic and cultural heritage as part of their everyday journeys. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce curated cultural and public-engagement initiatives at Namo Bharat stations.

The collaboration is aimed at transforming station spaces into platforms where passengers can encounter India’s traditions through art exhibitions, heritage displays, literary programmes, workshops, lectures, awareness initiatives and other cultural events.

Culture Meets Everyday Travel

The partnership brings together NCRTC’s expanding public-transport network and IGNCA’s expertise in documenting, preserving and promoting India’s artistic and cultural traditions.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA, said the partnership could create a new dimension to the travel experience across the National Capital Region. He drew a parallel between NCRTC’s role in connecting people and cities and IGNCA’s efforts to bring India’s cultural heritage to wider audiences.

Dr. Joshi emphasised that art and culture are inseparable from everyday life and expressed the hope that the collaboration would develop further and potentially serve as an example of how public transport spaces can become avenues for cultural engagement.

He also highlighted IGNCA’s involvement in significant cultural projects, including the gallery at the new Parliament building and its role in the installation of the Nataraja statue during the G20.

Delhi–Meerut Corridor Carries a Rich Historical Legacy

The initiative assumes particular significance because the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor connects locations with deep historical and cultural associations.

Delhi has played a central role in India’s political and cultural history for centuries, while Meerut and its surrounding region have associations with the heritage of the Mahabharata era as well as the beginning of the 1857 uprising during India’s freedom struggle.

Against this backdrop, the NCRTC-IGNCA collaboration seeks to bring aspects of this wider historical and cultural legacy closer to the public through the stations that serve these communities.

Exhibitions, Workshops and Literary Programmes

Under the agreement, both organisations will explore a range of initiatives within Namo Bharat station premises. These may include specially designed art and cultural exhibitions, heritage showcases, literary sessions, workshops, lectures and public-awareness programmes.

The objective is to make public spaces more accessible to India’s diverse cultural traditions and encourage passengers to engage with them during their regular journeys.

The initiative is also expected to create opportunities for students, artists, cultural practitioners, educational institutions and other community groups to participate in programmes hosted at Namo Bharat stations.

Namo Bharat Stations as Emerging Public Spaces

The Namo Bharat corridor currently carries approximately 1.1 lakh passengers every day, according to the information released for the initiative, and has crossed 4.5 crore commuter trips so far.

The growing ridership has strengthened the role of Namo Bharat stations as important public spaces within the cities and communities connected by the corridor. The new partnership seeks to use these spaces not only for transportation but also as points of cultural discovery and interaction.

The underlying idea is to make cultural experiences accessible to people as part of their daily movement rather than requiring them to specifically seek out cultural venues.

Expanding Public Access to India’s Cultural Heritage

NCRTC will provide the public platform through its Namo Bharat stations, while IGNCA will contribute its institutional expertise in preserving, promoting and disseminating India’s artistic, cultural and heritage traditions.

The collaboration is expected to support wider participation in cultural activities while strengthening NCRTC’s efforts to develop Namo Bharat stations as vibrant social and community hubs.

For IGNCA, the partnership offers another avenue to take India’s rich cultural heritage to a broader and more diverse audience.

Officials present at the occasion included Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA; Namita Mehrotra, Director (Finance), NCRTC; Rameshwar Meena, Director (Systems), NCRTC; Anurag Punetha, Media Controller, IGNCA; and Puneet Vats, Chief Public Relations Officer, NCRTC, along with other officials.

As Namo Bharat continues to strengthen connectivity across the National Capital Region, its stations are set to become spaces where commuters can encounter not only modern mobility but also the stories, traditions, artistic expressions and cultural heritage that form part of India’s diverse identity.
