Kolkata bags Best City Award for tackling waste management well
Along with 10 cities, Kolkata is the only Indian city to receive the prestigious prize. The awards were announced during the C40 Mayors Summit held in Mexico City. Other cities that won the award are Addis Adaba, Copenhagen, Curitiba, Sydney and Malborne, Paris, Portland, Seoul Shenzhen, and Yokohama.
Held in Mexico City, Kolkata municipal officials received the prestigious award from C40 Chair and Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes.
Municipal officials have visited 50,000 house and have made our people aware about the benefits of solid waste management.
The project involved 100 per cent door to door collection of solid waste, segregation and recycling by way of compositing which is sold in the market. One significant aspect of this project is that rag-pickers were part of it.
Kolkata has been mad a vat-free city. Kolkata Mayor said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wanted to make Kolkata ‘Green and Clean’ and that has been made possible. The citizens supported the initiative in a big way, he pointed out.

কঠিন বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনায় বিশ্বের সেরা শহরগুলির মধ্যে স্থান পেল কলকাতা। শুক্রবার মেক্সিকোয় বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন শহরের মেয়রদের নিয়ে ‘সি ৪০ মেয়র্স সামিট ২০১৬’য় এই পুরস্কার জিতে নিল এ শহরের পুরসভা।
তিন দিনের এই শীর্ষ সম্মেলনে ভারত থেকে যোগ দিয়েছিল দিল্লি, মুম্বই, চেন্নাইয়ের মতো শহরও। সকলকেই পিছনে ফেলেছে কলকাতা। অন্য বিজয়ী শহরগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে সিডনি, মেলবোর্ন, প্যারিস, কোপেনহেগেন, ইয়োকোহামা, আদ্দিস আবাবা প্রভৃতি। অনুষ্ঠানে বিশ্বের আরও দশটি শহরের সঙ্গে এই শিরোপায় ভূষিত কলকাতা পুরসভার তরফে পুরস্কার নিতে উপস্থিত ছিলেন রাজ্যের পুর-বিষয়ক সচিব। কঠিন বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনার প্রকল্পে একটা বড় ভূমিকা ছিল কাগজকুড়ানিদের। বাড়ি বাড়ি গিয়ে ১০০ শতাংশ বর্জ্য সংগ্রহ এবং পরে তার ব্যবস্থাপনায় সফল কলকাতা।
সম্প্রতি কম্প্যাক্টর যন্ত্র বসিয়ে কলকাতা পুর-এলাকা থেকে খোলা ভ্যাট তুলে দেওয়া হয়েছে। তার জেরে এই দুই সমস্যা থেকে মুক্তি মিলেছে অনেকটাই।
কলকাতার এই সাফল্য প্রসঙ্গে মেয়র বলেন, মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় গ্রিন অ্যান্ড ক্লিন সিটি চেয়েছিলেন। তাঁর অনুপ্রেরণায় এটা করতে পেরেছি আমরা। তাতেই এই সাফল্য। তবে জনগণের সহযোগিতা ছাড়া এটা সম্ভব ছিল না।
